At BandurArts, our mission is to advance bandura music and art through performance, composition, learning, advocacy, and the empowerment of bandura players — a mission we were founded upon and continue to build every day.
The sound of Ukraine’s national instrument the bandura carries centuries of history, resilience, and beauty. At BandurArts, we are dedicated to ensuring that this powerful voice of our culture is not only preserved but shared with communities locally and around the world.
BandurArts is a not-for-profit organization, recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, committed to preserving and promoting the bandura and the rich cultural traditions that surround it. Our mission is to advance bandura music and art through performance, composition, leaning, advocacy, and the empowerment of bandura players everywhere.
We believe the bandura is more than an instrument—it is a living symbol of Ukrainian identity, history and culture. Through concerts, workshops, educational initiatives, and collaborations, we work to support bandura community and artists, cultivate knowledge of the bandura, and ensure that our mission continues to inspire future generations.
The bandura is the instrument that best embodies the voice and soul of Ukraine. It is a truly unique and sophisticated musical instrument, distinguished by its intricate design and rich expressive range. With up to 65 strings, it combines elements of both the lute and the harp, creating a sound that is at once resonant, lyrical, and deeply evocative.More than its technical sophistication, the bandura stands apart as an instrument capable of carrying both musical and vocal traditions.
The evolution of the bandura reflects the history of the Ukrainian nation itself, extending back many centuries. Traditionally performed by blind kobzars who traveled from village to village sharing epic ballads and historical narratives, the bandura became a carrier of cultural memory and national identity. Over time, the instrument adopted various style creating a range of its technical versatility and deep tradition.
Despite this rich legacy, the bandura faces a critical challenge: it is not widely recognized or understood outside Ukrainian communities.
It is frequently mistaken for other string instruments such as the lute, guitar, or harp. Although it has gained some international visibility through Ukrainian performers, it still lacks the support and mainstream recognition afforded to more widely established instruments like the violin or classical guitar.
At BandurArts, we are committed to changing this. Our mission is to strengthen the bandura’s artistic presence, expand performance opportunities, and deepen awareness and understanding of the instrument. By increasing its visibility and accessibility, we work to elevate and advance the bandura as a vibrant and enduring expression of Ukrainian cultural heritage for future generations.
At BandurArts, we address one of the most pressing challenges facing the bandura today—its limited recognition and understanding—by transforming how the instrument is experienced, accepted, and shared.
We position performance as the living heartbeat of our work, bringing the bandura to diverse audiences.
We actively expand the artistic boundaries of the bandura by cultivating new works.
Through our learning initiatives, we build a global ecosystem of knowledge and connection. We empower individuals not only to learn the instrument, but to become informed ambassadors of its tradition, history, and cultural significance.
Our advocacy efforts elevate the bandura’s visibility and cultural standing by engaging with broader artistic and community networks. We work to ensure that the bandura is recognized both as a vital element of Ukrainian heritage and as a contemporary instrument.
Most importantly, we invest in people. By creating meaningful opportunities for bandura players to perform, collaborate, and grow, we nurture confident, innovative artists who will shape the future of the instrument.
